2010 BMW Concept 6

2010 BMW Concept 6

Fascination, Supremacy and Riding Comfort with Six Cylinders.

Munich. Six-cylinder power units have always had particular appeal, offering not only supreme smoothness and refinement, but also superior power and performance as well as a truly emotional driving – or, in this case, riding – experience. A further point is that the typical sound of a straight-six almost like a turbine is absolutely incomparable, with straight-six power units at BMW having stood for fascinating engine technology in BMW cars for more than seven decades.

Looking at motorcycles, inventive engineers have also tried time and again to offer the enthusiast the thrilling concept of a straight-six power unit. But while a few engines in straight-six configuration have indeed been fitted in motorcycles both lengthwise and crosswise, the straight-six has never really made a genuine breakthrough neither on production models nor in motorcycle racing.

Depending on the way the engine was fitted, six cylinders in-line inevitably made the engine either very long or very wide, creating disadvantages in terms of the running gear, weight distribution, and the centre of gravity. A further drawback was much higher engine weight usually setting off the benefits of extra engine power.

The BMW Concept 6 now proves that a straight-six, benefiting from the most advanced construction and production technology, may offer not only unique prestige, but also a supreme standard of riding dynamics.

The new BMW straight-six will further expand the K-Series in the foreseeable future. The first model to be introduced will be an innovative and luxurious BMW touring machine. Reflecting the tradition of the BMW K-Series, this will of course be a genuine top-of-the-line product.

Highly compact and dynamic six-cylinder.

The starting point for this dynamic introduction of the straight-six in the new Concept 6 from BMW Motorrad is of course the extremely compact form and configuration of the engine. The power unit is approximately 100 mm or 4" slimmer than all former straight-six production engines and only a bit wider than a large-capacity straight-four with conventional technology.

The reduction in width is achieved in particular by the slightly over-square bore: stroke ratio with relatively long stroke and very small gaps between cylinders. To achieve this very compact configuration with minimum width, the electrical ancillaries and their drive components are positioned behind the crankshaft in the open space above the transmission.

High-tech lightweight construction in all areas serves to make the power unit relatively light from the outset, important components in this context being the two hollow-drilled camshafts and the very light connecting rods. The perfect compensation of masses ensured by the configuration and layout of the engine avoids the need for a balance shaft and its drive elements on the new straight-six, which again means lower weight and enhanced running smoothness.

2011 BMW Concept C

2011 BMW Concept C

BMW Concept C. The scooter of the future made by BMW Motorrad.

Munich. Recent years have seen radical changes in the world of individual mobility, specifically in the conurbations, and the number of registrations has rocketed for virtually all individual transport concepts. However, the space available to traffic has not grown to the same extent, so individual mobility must come to terms with the new circumstances.

Against this background, BMW Motorrad will be expanding its present motorcycle adventure world to include the big scooter. This new product segment will first give rise to two innovative premium scooters with internal combustion engines. The differing characteristics of this concept will appeal to a broad target group. In addition, some thought is being given to a future alternative drive with electric motor.

BMW Motorrad will be combining in these scooters the outstanding handling of the motorcycle with the particular agility and conceptual comfort of the scooter for the maximum experience of dynamic riding – a big scooter made by
BMW Motorrad. There are plans to manufacture these future production vehicles at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin.

BMW Motorrad is continuing its strategy of strong and sustainable growth and so will be intensifying its traditional work in the enduro, touring, and sport touring fields. Following its successful entry to the super sport segment, BMW Motorrad will now be expanding its range yet again to include a highly promising business line.

This path leads straight to the big scooter segment. These high displacement vehicles with dynamic handling characteristics have gained considerable popularity all over the world. Moreover, they present an interesting alternative to returnees who up to now were undecided about motorcycles after long periods of abstinence.

BMW Concept C. New dimension in the field of big scooters.

New ideas and concepts on the subject of two-wheeled mobility are a decades old tradition at BMW Motorrad. Countless times, concept studies and drafts have been presented that reflect the power of innovation and future orientation of BMW Motorrad.

With its Concept C study, BMW Motorrad is yet again embarking on a new path and demonstrating a fascinating mobility option for the future. Here, C stands for “commuter”. Particularly in view of the traffic development in urban areas, it presents the prospect of an innovative, sporty big scooter for the future premium segment.

As usual at BMW Motorrad, there is more to this study than just an attempt to present a big scooter for the highest demands. Rather, the designers and engineers of BMW Motorrad focused above all on the emotive component in addition to the technical function and quality – and the thrill from the very first moment on.

BMW Concept C. Emotion, dynamic handling, and function in the design.

2011 Harley-Davidson XL 883L Sportster 883 SuperLow

2011 Harley-Davidson XL 883L Sportster 883 SuperLow

The SuperLow™ is easy to own and fun to ride. Balanced and responsive handling help rider and machine glide through corners with smooth confidence. The combination of wheel size, radial tires and front-end geometry contribute to outstanding maneuverability. The final drive ratio is matched to the rear wheel size to provide smooth acceleration. Generous rear-suspension travel, a deeply cushioned seat and easy-reach handlebar offer outstanding comfort. A low seat height, the broad V-Twin powerband and clean styling complete a package that will make the SuperLow appealing to many riders.

The new Harley-Davidson SuperLow model reintroduces the pure pleasure of motorcycling. Balanced and responsive handling help rider and machine glide through corners with smooth confidence. A low seat height, the broad V-Twin powerband and clean styling complete an appealing package. The SuperLow is an open invitation to get out and ride.

Comfort is a key aspect of the SuperLow experience. A new solo seat with a deep, bucket shape and soft filler offers good support. The shape of the seat and its 25.5-inch height make it possible for many riders to put feet securely on the ground when the bike is at rest. A new handlebar is shaped to provide a natural arm position. Dual coil-over rear shocks offer 2.5 inches of wheel travel for a smooth ride.

Several interdependent technical elements play a role in the particular vehicle dynamics Harley-Davidson engineers sought to achieve in the SuperLow model. Changes made to tire size and a new front fork angle give the SuperLow 5.7 inches of trail for outstanding steering feel and feedback to the rider.

"In engineering the tire-and-wheel design and steering geometry for the SuperLow, the team applied lessons learned in the development of the XR1200X, which result in similarly significant gains in maneuverability," said Jim Hofmann, General Manager, Motorcycle Product Planning. "The SuperLow is of course a very different motorcycle from the XR1200X, with a different mission, but the theme of achieving a precise balance of steering geometry, tire profile and construction, and suspension tuning is the same and equally successful. It takes just one ride on the SuperLow to believe it."

The 18-inch-diameter front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel are fitted with Michelin® Scorcher® 11 radial tires. The profile, tread pattern and construction of these tires were developed specifically to enhance the handling of the SuperLow model. The new wheel-and-tire combination significantly reduces mass and inertia front and rear, which when combined with the tire design, improves steering response, and reduces steering effort.

Its low-profile radial tires, solo seat and long fuel tank shape give the SuperLow an appealing new stance that's wide and low. With an MSRP starting at $7,999USD in Vivid Black, the SuperLow is the lowest-priced model in the 2011 Harley-Davidson line. The SuperLow is also available in Cool Blue Pearl, as well as Merlot Sunglo/Vivid Black and Birch White/Sedona Orange two-tone paint.

2005 Bimota DB5 Prototype

2005 Bimota DB5 Prototype

The first glimpses of the prototypes for Bimota's latest motorcycle development project, the DB5, have been seen powering around the back streets of the companies home town Rimini, Italy.

The feedback coming from the factory is that the handling of the bike has already proven to be superb and in perfect balance with the DB5's available power, generated by the Ducati 992cc engine.

The DB5 project, the first new model by the famous Italian brand after slightly more than four years and initially presented at Munich Intermot in late 2004, is set to continue the great heritage of Bimota road bikes. The company's goal is to create machines that deliver the right feeling by generating superior power and delivering advanced performance for the normal rider, who wants to experience the total motorcycle concept.

There has been no word on a finalized date for production start or market launch of the DB5 yet, although earlier reports from Rimini project this to happen some time in 2005.

Update:

Powered by a Ducati 1000 DS air cooled engine, this new model presents several details which only a Bimota can boast: tubular steel trellis frame with machined plates in aircraft alloy, a hitherto unseen tubular composite swing arm, and fully adjustable Öhlins suspension.

The styling by Sergio Robbiano, enhances the aggressiveness of the DB5 by leaving most of the mechanical parts in view.

2009 Aprilia FV2 1200 Concept

The Aprilia FV2 1200 is a concentration of technical innovation, a blend of technology, performance, and pure adrenaline. This amazing concept bike embodies the sum total of Aprilia's current technical know-how and points in the direction that technical development is likely to take at Noale in the next few years.

APRILIA FV2 1200

2007 was the twentieth anniversary of Aprilia's first GP win and a year in which another four world championships were won. This extraordinary achievement is a repeat of Aprilia's 2006 success story and takes the total of Aprilia's world championship titles to an amazing 31.

What better technical and sporting heritage could there be behind the Aprilia FV2 1200 concept bike? The FV2 1200 embodies the latest Aprilia technology and reveals the direction likely to be taken by technical and stylistic development at Aprilia in the near future.

The heart of the FV2 1200 is Aprilia's mighty, 1200 cc, 90° V twin, a power plant that confirms Aprilia's determination to develop high capacity, high technology engines using in-house skills and competence.

The minimalist bodywork of the FV2 1200 creates a stunning preponderance of volume towards the front of the bike. The result is a revolutionary, courageous and futuristic look that is destined to form the solid basis for the evolution of Aprilia motorcycle styling.

The engine also fulfils a structural role, and acts as the starting point for the backbone of the motorcycle, a carbon fibre, load bearing frame with integrated filter box. The seat is supported by an aluminium beam and by two carbon fibre struts that extend into the tail and around the rear light cluster. The parallelogram front suspension is based on the system already tried and tested on Aprilia's 250 cc GP racers.

These futuristic solutions have led to an amazing weight reduction (the FV2 1200 weighs under 160 kg) and an extremely compact size. The extraordinary agility that has always typified Aprilia motorcycles therefore finds its utmost expression in the FV2 1200.

The 1200 cc V twin engine is liquid cooled and boast a ride-by-wire control system. Traction control, a latest generation ABS system and electronic suspension management are also provided to let you ride at your performance peak while maintaining complete control over the bike.

The Aprilia FV2 1200's dashboard incorporates a multi-functional instrument cluster that can be interfaced not only with the bike's own CAN line but with a PC too, making it possible to download telemetric data for personal performance evaluations, reconfigure the information shown on the matrix display, load new mappings from the internet, display itineraries, and integrate GPRS and GSM modules for mobile phone connectivity.

2009 BMW Lo Rider Concept

2009 BMW Lo Rider Concept

The BMW Lo Rider – sporty, purist roadster study with an individually
variable design.

Purist, powerful, unfaired and reduced to the absolute essentials – these
few words provide an incomplete description of the BMW Lo Rider, the new
concept study by BMW Motorrad. At fi rst sight, the focus would seem to be
on the creation of a roadster with a muscular appearance, openly displayed
technology and powerful fl at twin engine for pure emotion and maximum
motorcycling fun. But behind all this is in fact a completely new custom
concept.

The bike’s low weight, the powerful and high-torque fl at twin engine and
high-quality chassis technology give it a high level of sporty riding dynamics,
while the lowered chassis and the relaxed yet active seating position with the
broad handlebars are more of a loan from cruisers and naked bikes.

The concept is such that, for the fi rst time, the customer can be involved
in the design of the BMW Lo Rider to an extent which goes beyond what
has previously been possible to date. Numerous options including different
exhaust systems, seats, headlamp units and paint fi nish variations allow for
a level of customisation which is far greater than the familiar individualisation
by means of special equipment features and accessories. This means that
the entire character of the vehicle can be adapted to the customer’s individual
taste: the customer can take full pleasure in assembling a machine just as he
wants it – from a cool cruiser to an aggressive muscle bike.

• Combines current technology with modern and classic stylistic elements.
• Design elements can be individually combined by the customer.
• Raised or lowered exhaust system, as preferred.
• Seat for one or two as preferred, or aluminium perch seat.
• Headlamp unit in classic shape or in streetfi ghter style, as preferred.
• Fuel tank with or without aluminium trim, as preferred.
• Four paint fi nishes for the fuel tank.
• Three paint fi nishes for the engine casing.
• Front and rear wheel wings fi nished either in black or chrome, as preferred.

The perfect compensation of masses ensured by the configuration and layout of the engine avoids the need for a balance shaft and its drive elements on the new straight-six, which again means lower weight and enhanced running smoothness.

In its layout, the straight-six featured in the Concept 6 follows the well-known straight-four in the K 1300 model series, again coming with cylinders tilted to the front by 55o. This ensures not only a low centre of gravity, but also very good weight balance as an element essential above all under sporting conditions for precise feeling and clear feedback from the front. A further advantage is that the tilted engine provides extra space for the aerodynamically positioned intake manifold directly above the engine and allows ideal configuration of the frame profiles following the flow of power.

The straight-six featured in the BMW Motorrad Concept 6 comes with dry sump lubrication. Apart from greater reliability even under extreme conditions, dry sump technology serves to keep the crankcase particularly low and flat, with the engine being fitted lower down and masses concentrated around the centre of gravity. Doing without an oil sump, the engine may be positioned far lower than on a conventional layout.

The oil reservoir is provided by an oil tank integrated at the rear of the engine block. This avoids the need for a separate tank, again helping to make the entire power unit more compact and reduce weight to a minimum.

DESIGN: CONCEIVED TO THRILL

The minimal and aggressive bodywork of the Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 adds the perfect finishing touches to the advanced motorcycle technology that forms the basis of its design. The Dorsoduro 750 is built around the rider. That is why, on this radical, daring and sporting machine everything contributes effectively to maximum riding pleasure. Plastic body panels have been reduced to a minimum for this very reason. As with top competition machines, anything that does not improve performance has been eliminated. Only the place for a number has been left to emphasis the bike's close ties with the world of racing.

The middle of the bike, the area most important to rider movement under competitive riding conditions, shows just how compact this design really is. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 is incredibly slender and agile and enters into instant symbiosis with its rider. Only a few metres on this amazing machine are enough to feel completely at one with it. Aprilia's design team have achieved this impressive result by giving the Dorsoduro a long, flat seat, derived directly from the world of racing, allowing the rider to find the most effective position at all times.

The sleek, compact tail houses a twinned exhaust, a solution that not only gives the bike a mean, aggressive look but also achieves perfect symmetry and ideal weight distribution. The hand guards are derived from those of the SXV supermotard and, despite their streamlined look, offer effective protection against accidental impacts with the control levers.

2009 Aprilia FV2 1200 Concept
