Lambretta



Lambretta was a line of motor scooters originally manufactured in Milan, Italy by Innocenti but also manufactured under licence by Société Industrielle de Troyes (S.I.T.) in France, NSU in Germany, Serveta in Spain, API in India, Pasco in Brazil, Auteca in Colombia and Siambretta in Argentina. In 1972, the Indian government bought the Milanese factory and the rights to the Lambretta name, creating Scooters India Limited (SIL). Today, the Innocenti brand name rights are owned by Fiat whereas the oldest Lambretta and Lambro trademark registrations are owned by Lambretta Consortium and are licensed to various companies who want association with the iconic brand.

History

In 1922, Ferdinando Innocenti of Pescia built a steel-tubing factory in Rome. In 1931, he took the business to Milan where he built a larger factory producing seamless steel tubing and employing about 6,000. During the Second World War, the factory was heavily bombed and destroyed. It is said that surveying the ruins, Innocenti saw the future of cheap, private transport and decided to produce a motor scooter – competing on cost and weather protection against the ubiquitous motorcycle.

Concept

The main stimulus for the design style of the Lambretta and Vespa dates back to Pre-WWII Cushman scooters made in Nebraska, USA. These olive green scooters were in Italy in large numbers, ordered originally by Washington as field transport for the Paratroops and Marines. The US military had used them to get around Nazi defence tactics of destroying roads and bridges in the Dolomites (a section of the Alps) and the Austrian border areas.

Aeronautical engineer General Corradino D'Ascanio, responsible for the design and construction of the first modern helicopter by Agusta, was given the job by Ferdinando Innocenti of designing a simple, robust and affordable vehicle. It had to be easy to drive for both men and women, be able to carry a passenger and not get its driver's clothes soiled.

The design

D'Ascanio, who hated motorbikes, designed a revolutionary vehicle. It was built on a spar-frame with a handlebar gear change and the engine mounted directly on to the rear wheel. The front protection "shield" kept the rider dry and clean in comparison to the open front end on motorcycles. The pass-through leg area design was geared towards women, as wearing dresses or skirts made riding conventional motorcycles a challenge. The front fork, like an aircraft's landing gear, allowed for easy wheel changing. The internal mesh transmission eliminated the standard motorcycle chain, a source of oil, dirt and aesthetic misery. This basic design allowed a series of features to be deployed on the frame which would later allow quick development of new models.

However, General D'Ascanio fell out with Innocenti, who rather than a moulded and beaten spar frame wanted to produce his frame from rolled tubing, there by allowing him to revive both parts of his pre-War company. General D'Ascanio disassociated himself with Innocenti and took his design to Enrico Piaggio who produced the spar framed Vespa from 1946.

Into production

Taking a year longer to produce, the 1947 Lambretta featured a rear pillion seat for a passenger or optionally a storage compartment. The original front protection "shield" was a flat piece of aero metal; later this developed in to a twin skin to allow additional storage on the 'back of'/behind the front shield, similar to the glove compartment in a car. The fuel cap was underneath the (hinged) seat which saved the cost of an additional lock on the fuel cap or need for additional metal work on the smooth skin.

Deriving the name Lambretta from the small river Lambro in Milan, which ran near to the factory, Innocenti started production of Lambretta scooters in 1947 - the year after Piaggio started production of its Vespa models. Lambrettas were manufactured under licence in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, India and Spain, sometimes under other names but always to a recognizable design (e.g. Siambretta in South America and Serveta in Spain).

BLMC closure of Innocenti

As wealth increased in Western Europe in the late 60s, the demand for motor scooters fell as the small car became available to more people and Lambretta started to struggle financially as did parent Innocenti. The British Leyland Motor Corporation took advantage of Innocenti's financial difficulties as well as their production and engineering expertise and contracted Innocenti to produce cars under licence from BLMC. The Innocenti Mini used the mechanical components of the original but was in many ways superior to it.

Innocenti/Lambretta was eventually sold to BLMC. With BLMC's lack of foresight, they had cottoned on to a fashion trend that was ending rapidly. Long industrial strikes in BMC ensued; motor scooter sales took a nosedive and both Innocenti and Lambretta shut up shop in 1972.

Design

The Piaggio X8's design is elegant with fluid lines and rounded edges. The resulting impression is one of harmony, comfort and practicality. The front of the X8 is similar to the standard Piaggio has set for all its GT maxi scooters. This time, however, it veers towards automobile rather than motorcycle style. The extended surface of the front lamp suggests dynamicity without being too aggressive. The use of a multi-focus reflector ensures excellent visibility in the worst weather conditions.

The front shield and windscreen are wide and protective. CAD-sketched down to the last detail, the body of the X8 has given excellent results in terms of rider protection during wind tunnel tests.

The chrome trim highlights the sharply drawn lines of the scooter on details such as the edge of the wide footrest and the vehicle identification plates as well as the strip that runs along the sides of the Piaggio X8. The loading lid, the only one of its kind in the category, is painted black, a feature that takes the X8 close to the sport wagon concept, while its shape emphasises the scooter's exceptional storage possibilities. With a 56-litre load capacity and dual access to the storage area - through a car-type rear boot lid as well as by tipping up the seat - the Piaggio X8 is extremely practical. It actually has more storage space than many higher-category maxi GT scooters.

The under-seat space of the Piaggio X8 can hold two full-face helmets, a small bag and sundry items up to 80 cm in length, such as a tennis racket. The large space also has a seat protection cover in case the scooter needs to be parked in the rain, as well as a courtesy light.

This ensures comfort and protection for the rider as well as the passenger, who can also make use of the rear grips. The seat is wide and well padded with a built-in backrest, modelled to adapt to the rider's body.

In order to make parking as quick and easy as possible, the Piaggio X8 has a double stand - a handy side stand as well as the usual central stand. The Piaggio X8's analogue instrument panel lets the rider check vehicle information at all times. It includes a speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature indicators, a clock, and partial and total mileage. Cycle parts

The X8 frame is the result of an entirely new project and Piaggio made use of the best CAD technology to create it. The double-cradle frame in steel tubes has a telehydraulic fork with 35-mm shafts. At the rear, the engine/crankcase transmission acts as a single-arm with two dual-effect hydraulic shock absorbers and spring preload adjustable to four positions. The front wheel, stopped by a 260-mm steel disk and dual-piston floating caliper, measures 14" to enhance stability and road grip. At the rear, the 12" wheel rim is supplied with a large tyre (130/70) to provide the storage bay with extra space and improve road behaviour, and thereby allows for a lower seat height. The rear brake is a 240-mm steel disk gripped by a caliper with 32-mm opposed pistons.

Engines

The Piaggio X8's two versions, 200 and 125, are equipped with latest-generation LEADER engines. These four-stroke, four-valve, liquid-cooled units have sparkling performance at the top of their category as well as reduced fuel consumption. Low consumption and a 12-litre tank give the Piaggio X8 an enviable running range.

The LEADER 200 engine outputs 21 hp, giving the Piaggio X8 performance worthy of a 250. Acceleration, pick-up and maximum speed are benchmark level for this category. The 125 version is just as quick, and offers power output of 11 kW as per the norm for a vehicle that can be driven with a car license. On both Piaggio X8 engines, the variable speed drive has been improved. The result is smoother and more progressive output that makes riding these LEADER-equipped vehicles even more of a pleasure, with power output fluidly managed for the Piaggio X8's city use.

The Piaggio X8 shows concern for the environment. Its ultra-modern LEADER engines, both equipped with two-way catalytic converters and secondary air systems, are well within Euro2 emissions and noise limits; emissions are the lowest of any scooter in the GT category.

Chassis/Suspension:
  • The steel double-cradle frame is long and low, contributing to the bike’s spacious 95.9-inch (2435mm) overall length and 66.3-inch wheelbase. That means a great ride to go along with the great looks.
  • With a seat height a mere 26.5 inches off the pavement, one of the lowest around, and a fuel tank that’s made as narrow as possible where it meets the seat, it is easy for most riders to put both feet firmly on the ground.
  • Fenders are real steel, front and rear. That adds to the quality look and feel, and makes customization easier.
  • The big 18-inch front wheel helps deliver this cruiser motorcycle’s sporty handling characteristics and “New Style Cruiser” looks. The low-profile 130/70-18 tire is mounted on a newly designed 8-spoke lightweight aluminum wheel. The 170/70-16 bias ply rear tire adds a beefy look and helps transfer all that torque and power to the pavement.
  • Large 320mm front and 298mm rear discs provide strong braking capacity with excellent feel.
  • Front forks feature big 41mm tubes, and rear suspension is a bottom-link-type monocross shock. Settings are calibrated to deliver a plush ride that is increasingly firm as the suspension is compressed for good handling and comfort over bigger bumps in the road.

Additional Features:
  • The newly designed large-diameter meter is mounted on the fuel tank for a traditional look. Meter functions include speedometer, fuel level warning light, oil level warning light, and odometer with two trip meter functions, fuel trip meter, and clock display. The LCD display illumination can be adjusted using a right side handlebar switch.
